Catherine Suttle PhD MCOptom SFHEA

 I have over 20 years’ experience of teaching and research in vision and eye care at the University of New South Wales and at City, University of London. I have published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in vision science, including optometry and ophthalmology, and have supervised 12 PhD students to completion in these fields. I am a Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Eduction Academy.

I have peer-reviewed numerous manuscripts for a range of journals including Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Optometry and Vision Science, PLOSONE, Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. I have had several years’ experience as an Associate Editor for the journal Clinical and Experimental Optometry.

Having spent much of my academic life writing and reviewing manuscripts in vision science fields, I decided in 2019 to use this experience to start EyeWrite, offering writing support and guidance specifically for eye and vision sciences.

Elmien Wolvaardt BSc AFHEA

With over 20 years’ experience in health and science communication and education, I support individuals and organisations to improve health and public health – at local and international level – by effectively communicating their ideas, research and experience to a wide range of audiences.

I have 13 years’ experience as Editor of the Community Eye Health Journal (, an international academic and continuing medical education (CME) journal for health professionals, researchers and decision makers with eye health responsibilities.

I have a BSc in Applied Mathematics and am an Associate Fellow of the UK’s Higher Education Academy. I am based at the Lon don  School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) where, in addition to my role as editor of  the Journal, I support the MSc Infectious Diseases Distance Learning degree course as Deputy Module Organiser: Introduction to Epidemiology and Biostatistics. I am also a freelance writer and podcaster for LSHTM’s Press Office.

Prior to this, I have worked for the Wellcome Trust’s Science Media Centre, the Science and Development Network (, the South African Medical Research Council and the South African Broadcasting Council.
